Reflections on the Mystery of Suffering Volume 22 Number 1
Spring, 2003

From the Executive Director

What does war do to us as human beings? What is happening to our heart and soul and spirit as we carefully calculate plans for unspeakable violence? The stories of survivors of war in this issue of Stauros notebook are priceless gifts. They remind us of humanity’s need to be grounded in the Divine Heart of love and compassion. Peace reigns where justice prevails.

Stauros stands as a witness to God’s enduring love for people of all nations. I am happy to announce a new program that will help us extend our reach in bringing this message of love, hope, and peace to those who are suffering. The Stauros Center for Compassion and Healing is partnering with the Holy Cross Province of the Congregation of the Passion to develop a Bureau of Passionist Presenters. These vowed religious and lay presenters will be available for seminars, retreats, and reflections. More detailed information on the Bureau of Passionist Presenters will be available in Summer 2003.
We are also in the process of developing a program of eMinistry with our newly redesigned web site as an active, exciting place of discussion, communication, and support. Please visit us at www.stauros.org. While there you can access 20 years of Stauros Notebook archives, link to websites of common interest, and financially contribute to Stauros U.S.A.

Did you know that each issue of Stauros Notebook is available on audiocassette? This is a wonderful gift for those who are visually impaired and would like to stay in touch with the unique ministry that is Stauros. A one-year audiocassette subscription is $20 and two years is $38, the same price as the printed version. Your subscription, whether print or audiocassette, is an important, positive action that helps sustain our ministry and mission.

Your financial support is very encouraging and deeply appreciated. Thank you to all who have recently become subscribers, and to all who have contributed either to the Stauros Center for Compassion and Healing for program support or to The Stauros Fund for general operating expenses. Your gifts make a world of difference!

Finally, I am saddened to inform you that the Stauros U.S.A. Board of Directors recently voted to postpone the Access to the Land of the Bible study trip scheduled for August 2003. We are very committed to resuming this unique trip to the Holy Land when it is more feasible to do so. All of us here at Stauros continue to cherish life in the midst of suffering. Let us pray for peace in every heart, in every nation on earth.

Blessings,

Susan M. Pudelek

"Stauros" is the Greek word for "cross." Central to our mission is remembering the sufferings of Christ as a powerful paradigm for interpreting God’s action in the world. From this foundation, we reach out as an ecumenical, interreligious organization to empower all of us, no matter our faith or nationality, to find meaning, hope, and peace within the mystery of suffering. Stauros addresses both the physical and spiritual needs of those who suffer, working together so that faith is strengthened and hope flourishes.
