IMAGES OF SUFFERING

Abraham Rattner (American, 1893-1978)
Christ on the Cross, 1941, Pen and ink on paper, 9 x 5 in.
Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art, St. Petersburg Junior College

Allen Leepa in his biography of Abraham Rattner calls the artist "a painter of the tragic." Rattner's images of the crucifixion convey that reality. They confront the viewer with the ultimate paradox of the Christian faith, God's love reflected in suffering.
