Excerpt from Goatwalking
by Jim Corbett
Is this the wisdom of the old?
--- the ripeness only rot can know?
all touch makes love, when death makes cold;
bright heavens faded, stars will show.
Then I have wandered sun-blind through day dreams,
picked all my finest fruit while it was green,
instead of stellar course, tracked praise-worn schemes.
As I decay, receding into earth,
each ache an echo in a carnal tomb,
this rot that ripens fallows vernal birth,
until each woman is a girl in bloom,
and all the passing world I watch grows young,
--- and loved,
with longings age tills in,
unsung.
